Bad Candy, Brookland’s Art Gallery Pop Up, Closed Ahead Of Schedule Due To Building Conditions
Historical article: 2021-12-19. Events and business information may have changed.

When the Bad Candy art gallery pop up opened in June it held a lot of promise to bring some life back to 12th Street NE. Unfortunately we learned from an Instagram post that they are closing up shop earlier than intended. From their post:
It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you bad candy is closed…for now. A few months ago we were physically closed down by the DCRA and threatened with huge fines if we opened up again. We were closed because even though our building is completely fine and has already hosted many people safely…it is not in proper building code with DCRA law. We tried EVERYTHING we could to change this but the amount of money and time it would take to the re-open the doors at this location would not make sense. Especially considering this was a one year pop up before the building got demolished.
That being said what we accomplished in 4 months from June to September was absolutely phenomenal. Our goal this whole time was to provide to the art scene something we wish existed. A permanent spot for local art where the exciting opening shows didn’t last just one night.
Thank you so much to the amazing community who showed us so much love and support. Without you we are nothing.
Going forward we are already looking at new locations and have some amazing opportunities outside of a physical location. We will keep you updated on this next part of the journey. Stay sweet and see you in 2022. 🍬
It’s really unfortunate that the building is in that condition, but also super interesting that they mention plans to demolish the building. Perhaps plans for the 12th Street Market are still on the table in some shape or form. Bad Candy was located at 3508 12th St NE (between Monroe and Newton).
