DC Eater Article Highlights Dining Options In Langdon And Woodridge

We thought neighbors would be interested in exploring some eats in the Woodridge/Langdon area that perhaps they haven’t had a chance to check out yet, or weren’t aware of. This article in DC Eater came out a few months ago, so forgive us for taking so long to post about it, but we think it is worth checking out. The piece has write ups for the following places:

  • The Public Option
  • Good Food Market
  • Subbs by Carl
  • Nido
  • Zeke’s Coffee of DC
  • Rita’s Italian Ice
  • Deli City
  • Mason Dixie Biscuit Company
  • Harper Macaw Factory
  • DC Brau Brewing Company

It’s great to see these great establishments getting some coverage. Happy eating!

Langdon Park ANC Sues Over Lack Of Notification On Industrial City Projects

2424 Evarts Street  NE, one of the proposed sites, is about one block away from Langdon Park

We thought neighbors would be interested in a dispute going on between residents of nearby Langdon Park and the city. Legally, the city must notify the respective Councilmembers and ANC Commissioners 30 days prior to changing the usage of a city property or leasing/buying a property. In the case of a number of industrial projects in this area, the city admittedly failed to do so, resulting in lawsuits against Mayor Bowser, the Department of General Service and its director, and the owner of one of the properties. DCist did a thorough write up of the projects  and the anticipated impacts, such as an increase in traffic from trucks and other heavy industrial vehicles in a residential neighborhood. From the DCist article:

Ward 5, and Langdon Park specifically, is home to much of the city’s remaining industrial land, including warehouses, marijuana cultivation centers, parking lots, junkyards, and two trash transfer stations interspersed among blocks of primarily single-family homes. The city quietly planned to add a fleet yard and offices for the Department of Parks and Recreation, a training center and parking for the D.C. Department of Corrections, and a facility D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department to the mix.

Ward 5 Homeless Shelter Design Meeting Wednesday

1700 Rhode Island Ave NE,the site of the future Ward 5 homeless shelter.

We first started tracking developments regarding the future Ward 5 homeless shelter in February 2016. The last time we wrote about it, in April, the cities request for a zoning change  at the location (1700 Rhode Island Avenue) was approved. Now that things are moving forward, the community is invited to a design meeting. From a community announcement:

Ward 5 Short-Term Family Housing Community Design Meeting Number 2
When: Wednesday August 23rd, 2017 7PM-8:30PM
Where: Brookland Middle School; 1150 Michigan Avenue, NE
Purpose: Share input on the building exterior design and landscaping, and learn how to stay involved as the project moves forward.

Zoning Approved For Proposed Ward 5 Homeless Shelter

1700 Rhode Island Ave NE,the proposed site of the Ward 5 homeless shelter.

In January we wrote that the DC government submitted a zoning application in order to move forward with the proposed Ward 5 homeless shelter. The proposed shelter location is the former MPD Building at 1700 Rhode Island Avenue, NE.  We recently learned from this WAMU story that the Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA)  approved the zoning changes requested, paving the way for the shelter to move forward, and a step closer to the closing of DC General, which has housed up to 270 families at a time. From the WAMU story:

At a 13-hour hearing last month on whether the city should be granted a zoning waiver to go ahead with construction, critics that argued that the proposed buildings would be too tall and would create additional traffic in surrounding neighborhoods. They also took issue with how the sites for the shelters were selected, saying the nearby residents had not been properly consulted.

On Wednesday morning, zoning board members shot down those arguments.

You can see the Zoning request here. We will let you know when we hear anything new.
