Back in July 2015, Brookland lost an institution when the True Value Hardware store at the corner of 12th and Monroe closed after 40 years. Since then there have been rumors about what would take its place, but nothing definite looking till now. We recently noticed a sign for Nido Nursing Center on the still papered-over store windows. The website address listed didn’t yield any information, so we did some digging around on Facebook and found a page for Nido Nursing Center, which lists 3501 12th Street (12th & Monroe) as its location and announces in the post below that they are coming to Brookland.
The post says that they “…are aiming to open mid fall, early winter… if not sooner.” We were able to peek in and it didn’t look like they will meet that target. The space still looked pretty rough and gutted out, but had some wall framing up. We are curious about how pickup/drop off will work at such a busy intersection, but time will tell. We will keep an eye on things and let you know when we learn anything new.
Yesterday we received a press release regarding the closing of Brookland Hardware and the opening of Annie’s Ace Hardware.
Fans of Brookland Hardware will be happy to hear that owner Howard Politzer will be joining Annie’s Ace Hardware as a Senior Adviser and Annie’s Ace will be hiring Howard’s employees to honor the deep connections they have to the neighborhood. Also, according to the release:
An event is planned for Saturday, August 1 from 11am-1pm at Brookland True Value Hardware to celebrate and honor Howard Politzer’s legacy… Invited guests include Mayor Muriel Bowser, DC Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, and John Feeley, Jr. and Rosie Dempsey, authors of Brookland (Images of America) (2011, Arcadia Publishing).
Annie’s Ace Hardware is slated to open in Fall 2015 and will be will be the second location for the popular neighborhood hardware store. Annie’s will be located at 3405 8th Street, NE.
Many Brookland residents received unwelcome news in their mailboxes yesterday – longtime neighborhood business, Brookland Hardware is closing after more than 40 years.
According to the letter, the store’s owner, Howard, is retiring and will be liquidating the store’s inventory via a “retirement – store closing sale” from Thursday July 23 – Wednesday July 29th. So with that, Brookland loses another major landmark and cornerstone.
We will let you know when we hear of what will become of this space at the heart of our neighborhood.
