We recently posted that the location where Serendipity coffeehouse used to be might become a bbq restaurant. We followed up with the management of Brookland’s Finest and learned that those plans for the location fell through. Soon afterwards though, we noticed that the “For Lease” sign in the Serendipity window was gone, so we kept hope alive that something good would be coming soon. Then yesterday we got the great news that Indian restaurant Indigo is planning to open a location here in Brookland. Judging by the pictures, it looks a lot like it will be at the old Serendipity location. Check out Indigo’s Facebook post below with the announcement.
Indigo is more than just your average Indian restaurant. Gone is sea of fat and excess salt usually found at other Indian restaurants. In it’s place are well-sized portions of flavorful, pleasantly spicy, fresh ingredients. Our kitchen prepares food in the way our mother, grandmother and the entire Tandon lineage has done before; simply put, good food and good family lead to a happy life.
Assuming this comes through, we are very excited by the news! Welcome to the neighborhood, Indigo. The Serendipity location is 3301 12th Street NE (at the corner of Kearney St).
The BNCA is hosting a social hour on Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:00pm. From an email:
Meet your neighbors and the officers of the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association (BNCA) at Serendipity Jazz Coffeehouse! The event is open to all ages. Light appetizers will be available, courtesy of the new Brookland Exxon station located at 3426 18th Street NE.
Back in March we wrote about Serendipity, a new jazz-focused coffeehouse that opened at the corner of 12th and Kearny Streets, NE. We decided to grab some friends and check it out. The music was really high quality, especially considering there is no cover charge. We enjoyed a number of the specialty cocktails, including one called the Brookland Heartbeet that features an earthy beet-infused vodka. The menu ranges from snacks and appetizers like chicken wings to sandwiches and burgers, as well as entrees like fried catfish. Everyone enjoyed their meal and it was reasonably priced. We will definitely be back. Check out our photos below, and their Facebook page for more info and to learn about upcoming special events. Serendipity is open seven days a week and the live jazz is Wednesday – Sundays from 7:30 – 11:00 pm.
Their usual happy hour is from 5-7p, but they’ll extend HH specials until 8p for our group. Make sure you have a name tag on!
Please feel free to invite and share this information with your neighbors! For more information contact us via email at firstname.lastname@example.org, find us on Facebook ‘Ward 5 Community Happy Hour’ or find us on Twitter @ward5happyhour.
The BNCA invites you to the next gathering of the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association, which will be held on Saturday, May 30, from 10:00am to 11:30am at Serendipity Cafe at 3301 12th St NE.
This month’s convening will be in an “open house” format. We hope this will accommodate busy weekend schedules and allow for informal dialogue. Come join us for a cup of coffee, tea and/or danish for a discussion about development activity in the neighborhood and the Brookland-Edgewood Livability Study, a city-led effort focused on transportation in our community.
Drop by for 5-10 minutes or stay for the entire time. We want to hear thoughts from BNCA members about how our civic association can take steps to shape development activity in the neighborhood. We also plan to look together at the online map for the livability study and add feedback to it. You can view what’s on the map here: http://belivabilitystudy.com/interactive-study-area-map/. In addition, if you have neighbors who are not yet members of BNCA, please invite them to drop by next Saturday to meet officers and become a member.
Back in February, we wrote about Optimism bar/lounge reopening as a coffeehouse with live jazz. Yesterday the location opened its doors for a soft opening under the new name Serendipity Jazz Coffeehouse.
We spoke at length with long-time Brookland resident and Serendipity owner Jesse Brown. He said that the new concept is starting off on a very low-key note, at first just offering a selection of coffees. teas, pastries and muffins. This isn’t the first time he has tried this concept, Jesse owned the Cup of Dreams coffee bar from 1997 – 2001 at the location now occupied by Askale Cafe at 12th and Otis. Soon they will offer sandwiches and eventually beer, wine and liquor. At some point live jazz and blues, and a more extensive menu will follow as well. In addition to the concept change, Jesse has made some nice renovations that have transformed the space from adult lounge to comfy coffeehouse. As you can see from the photos, he has added a lot of wood paneling, along the walls and the bar, as well as new modern ceiling fans, new seating and larger, updated bathrooms.
The old Optimism signage has been taken down and Jesse expects to add signage soon to reflect the new Serendipity logo and name. For now the operating hours will be roughly 6:00 am -midnight, though that, and other details will be tweaked as they collect and react to feedback from patrons. Serendipity Jazz Coffeehouse is located at 3301 12th Street NE (at the corner of Kearney St).
