This is another “catch up” story, but for those Brooklanders who are avid readers and didn’t know, this is big news. This spring websites like Urban Turf shared that super-popular independent DC-based bookstore Politics and Prose will be opening another location nearby. From the article:
The bookstore announced this morning that the new store will open near Union Market, but did not specify the store’s exact location…The release goes on to say that there will be event space attached to the store and that it will use the Dock 5 event space attached to Union Market for larger events and readings.
The new location is planned to open this coming fall.
Many ourdoorsy Brooklanders are eagerly awaiting the opening of the NoMa REI store at First and L Streets NE. The store, which will occupy the location of the former Uline Arena, is hosting a series of events to get folks excited about the outdoors – like campfires, outdoor movies, and classes related to hiking, backpacking and kayaking. In December we wrote about a development coming soon on top of nearby Union Market. Although it is not in Brookland, we thought readers would be interested in knowing that the development we wrote about is really only the beginning of a development frenzy about to take place around Union Market.
According to this article in the Washingtonian, there is going to be a boom of eight new housing, retail and green space developments in the next five years, which will include:
The Edison residences at 340 Florida Ave NE will be the first residential development in the Union Market area and will have ground-floor retail. The 187 rental units will resemble lofts and feature wide, nine-paneled windows.
Another residential development on Fourth Street, NE, may have up to 500 apartments, and will incorporate an existing 1950s warehouse.
The expansion of Union Market at 1309 Fifth St. NE which will top Union Market with the Angelika Film Center and four floors of office or residential space.
The Highline, an 315 rental unit development at 320 Florida Avenue will replace the Burger King near the Metro tracks and expects to break ground by July 2016.
Another apartment building, Elevation is replacing a vacant lot. The developer, Level 2, is hoping to get the city of DC to convert property next to development into a park with a pedestrian walkway that leads to Union Market.
A three-block pedestrian promenade, called the NoMa Meander is planned that will include green areas and water features,.
Underground parks featuring artwork beneath four underpasses created by Metro and Amtrak tracks should begin by the end of 2015.
Looking for something fun and local to do this weekend? As part of DC Beer Week, there will be a free outdoor festival, the NoMa Beer Fest, in nearby NoMA this Saturday, August 17, from 2 pm to 8 pm. There will be special summer beers brewed just for the festival, live music, DJs spinning and games for the whole family. There will also be food trucks and food from Union Kitchen.Get ahead of the lines and purchase your food and beer tickets ahead of time. The breweries participating include DC Brau, Chocolate City Brewing Company, District Chophouse, Capital City Brewing Company, Three Stars Brewing Co., The Brewer’s Art and Right Proper Brewery. Sounds like fun!
