Tom Bridge, President of the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association (BNCA) issued a statement on the Brookland Yahoo! Group (listserv) delaying tomorrow’s Great Brookland Yard Sale until tomorrow, Sunday, May 12th:
Due to the very high chance of inclement weather tomorrow, at this time, we are opting to use the Rain Date of Sunday May 12th, from 10am to 2pm.
We are very sorry to have to move the sale to Mother’s Day, but at this time, it is our best option.
Due to the last minute nature of the move, tables will NO LONGER be available for rent at St. Anthony’s or Guildfield Baptist Church.
We will be calling all sellers and updating our map, and I will send out a map update late this evening.
The Garden Club is moving our plant sale to Sunday as well. If you have plants to donate and can’t make it on Sunday, please let me know. We will have an alternative location for Saturday drop-off. See you Sunday! We will be across from the CVS, 9:00 – 4:00 pm.
All in not lost though! The fine guys over at Chocolate City Beer are having their usual growler hours tomorrow, so why not check them out instead? Chocolate City Beer is located at 2801 8th St, NE. From their Facebook page:
Come by tomorrow for tours, tastings, and growlers of First Coast Bohemian Pils and Copper Ale, and lunch by DC Slices! 12:30-4:30PM.
There are some great local events taking place tomorrow, Saturday May 11th. We are going to try our best to catch them all in this order – Met Branch Trail 5K in the morning, Great Brookland Yard Sale and Garden Club Plant Sale in the late morning to afternoon and the Gateway Arts District Open Studio Tour (covered here Wednesday) in the late afternoon and evening. Whew! Here is a rundown of what you need to know:
Metropolitan Branch Trail 5K
The Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) 5K Run/Walk is one of our favorite area events, because it brings greater awareness to the Trail, a fantastic local resource. The race will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the MBT entrance on S Street and 4th Street, NE. This will be the third year the race is being held, and organizers are expecting participation to increase again for 2013, as it has with each year. There will be awards for the top male and female overall winners, as well as age group winners, T-shirts, and post-race refreshments. This year my wife and I will be running (ok, most likely, walking) alongside the other participants and we can’t wait. See you out there!
6th Annual Great Brookland Yard Sale (GBYS)
The GBYS is a set date for Brookland residents to host concurrent yard sales. Once again, the GBYS is organized by the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association (BNCA). This year they have over 60 Brookland households participating in their yards, so it’s a great way to meet your neighbors! Check out the GBYS website out here for a map of the yard sales. Generally, the sale runs from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, but individual yard sale times can vary. Don’t forget to check out the “flea market” areas at Guildfield Baptist Church and St. Anthony’s School, and we recommend stopping by and supporting the DC Different Drummers yard sale.
The Guildfield Baptist Church Lot is located at 1023 Otis Street, NE and will be open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. While they have all kinds of items, this sale is known for some amazing home cooking such as chicken, fish, and homemade cakes and pies.
The St. Anthony Catholic School Spring Market at 12th and Monroe Streets, NE, will have multiple sellers, and last year they had some great food items. They will begin at 10:00 AM and conclude at 2:00 PM.
DC’s Different Drummers – 3700 13th Street, NE. This sale will have items from multiple households so they will have a big selection of items. This yard sale will benefit DC’s Different Drummers, a non-profit LGBT community band.
Tom Bridge, President of the BNCA issued a statement on the Brookland Yahoo! Group (listserv) about the possibility of rain:
I want to wait until at least noon on Friday to make that decision…IF WE CANCEL FOR SATURDAY, the plan is to push it off to Sunday and go the same hours: 10a – 2p.
Greater Brookland Garden Club Plant Sale
The Garden Club will be hosting their annual plant sale tomorrow from 9 am – 4 pm, in the Long and Foster parking lot, across the street from CVS (12th and Newton). All profits from the Plant Sale will be used for the planting and care of the community public gardens the Garden Club maintains in Brookland. The plant sale is always one of our favorite stops while we are bargain hunting on GBYS day. The Garden Club members are such a friendly bunch and there is always an inviting array of plants grown locally with care to choose from. You can also pick up more gardening tips than you can remember! In case of rain, the Garden Club will follow the schedule of the GBYS.
The good people of the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association (BNCA) have set up a new website for the Great Brookland Yard Sale (GBYS), complete with an on-line sign up form. Check it out here. For those of you unfamiliar with the event, here are the basics:
WHAT IS GBYS? The GBYS is a set date for Brookland residents to host concurrent yard sales. Once again, the GBYS is organized by the BNCA. Last year there were over 70 yard sales.
WHEN IS IT? Saturday May 11th, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm (individual yard sale times can vary)
WHERE IS IT? All over the neighborhood, in individual seller’s yards. There will be a map of individual addresses and information on the website.
Also note that the Greater Brookland Garden Club will be having their annual plant sale at 12th and Newton Streets from 10:00 am-4:00 pm. (Annuals, Perennials, Natives, Vegetables, Herbs, and Tropicals.)
It’s that time of year again – where neighbors start revving up for the Great Brookland Yard Sale! For those of you unaware, the GBYS is a set date for Brookland residents to host concurrent yard sales. The GBYS is organized by the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association (BNCA) and is a positive event for the neighborhood. It brings people from across the city into Brookland to see what a great community we have, it gets us out and about to meet our neighbors, and those who have yard sales get rid of stuff and make a little bit of money. Thus far, the GBYS has been a very successful event, and every year it grows bigger. Last year we had over 70 yard sales, a food truck, and neighborhood organizations like Dance Place participate. But, it takes work. Like previous years, this is an all volunteer event. This year, the GBYS will take place on Saturday, May 11th, 2013, and we expect a lot more details to come. Of note, the Greater Brookland Garden Club hosts its annual plant sale on the same day. The sale is located at 12th and Newton and they sell a wide variety of plants (Annuals, Perennials, Natives, Vegetables, Herbs, and Tropicals).
