The Friends of Noyes Park (FoNP) is a community 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to the care and preservation of Noyes Park. FoNP launched shortly after the new park was opened in summer 2013. They work closely with the community and the Department of Parks and Recreation to keep the park clean and the the communal garden plots thriving. FoNP  is seeking new volunteers to serve (unpaid) on their Board of Directors. This is a great opportunity for those interested in giving back to the community without a burdensome time commitment. From the application page:

Directors are expected to attend monthly meetings (first Monday of the month), attend park clean ups and other programmatic activities of the Board, and assist with other ongoing efforts of the Board (e.g., fundraising, attending community meetings, community outreach, etc.).

Interested parties can apply here. You can keep up with and contact the FoNP by checking out their website,  Facebook page,  and Twitter feed. Noyes Park is located at 10th and Franklin Streets, NE.

Noyes Park Community Garden Plot Registration Begins Soon

Interested in meeting neighbors and growing your own garden? Consider signing up for one of the community garden plots at Noyes Park. Registration for the 2017 growing season will begin on January 15, 2016.

From their plot registration webpage:

The Noyes Community Garden has twenty 8’x4’ plots. At least two of these plots will be reserved for public use and planted in conjunction with local youth and school children, and the remaining will be available for individuals or groups within the community. All DC residents who are not already tending a garden plot in a DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) garden are eligible to sign up for a garden plot. There is a $30 yearly fee to use the plots in Noyes Park.

Registration for the 2017 growing season will begin on January 15, 2017. The open registration period will be held between January 15 and January 31. Should the number of registrants exceed the number of available plots, we will use a lottery system to assign plots. If there are still spaces available after January 31, registration will remain open on a first-come, first-served basis. To register for a plot, fill out the online registration form which will become available on our website (friendsofnoyespark.org) beginning January 15. Help Out The Friends Of Noyes Park By Completing This Simple Form

We recently heard from our friend, Friends of Noyes Park President Carlos Pinto. He is asking that Brooklanders take a moment to complete this form in order to demonstrate to the ANC 5B commissioners that the FoNP is supported by the community. Filling out the form will take you about 30 seconds and here is an explanation why you should do it:

The Friends of Noyes Park (FoNP) is seeking to be designated by the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) as the official organization charged with supporting Noyes Park.

At present, the FoNP has been an extremely active DPR-recognized “Adopt-a-Park” group and its primary responsibilities have been to advocate for and assisting in ensuring that Noyes Park remains a clean and safe place for children, adults, and seniors of all ages to enjoy.

This is and will always continue to be the FoNP’s primary objective. However, if DPR permits the FoNP to graduate from an “Adopt-a-Park” group to a

“Friends of” group the FONP will also be permitted to:

  1. host fundraisers at Noyes Park, which in turn will,
  2. allow the FoNP to purchase and/or receive donations of equipment needed to make park improvements, and
  3. allow the FoNP to conduct community events and programs that enrich the community’s residents.

To obtain the “Friends of” designation, the FoNP is required to:

  • demonstrate support from the community that the FoNP is the appropriate group to steward Noyes Park, and
  • receive a letter from support from the ANC 5B.

The FoNP will be seeking the ANC 5B’s letter of support shortly after they resume meetings after the summer recess. In the meantime, however, the FoNP is urging all residents who visit the park to take a moment and complete this brief form.

The FoNP’s development director, Christina Macken (christina(at)friendsofnoyespark(dot)org) is available to provide responses to all questions/comments/concerns received.
