We are happy to report that Licking Creek Bend Farm, a sustainable farm located in Pennsylvania will be returning to supply Brookland with their amazing selection of fresh produce. Every year they have been known for excellent items like juicy peaches, huge heirloom tomatoes, nectarines and corn. In addition to the amazing produce, there are others vendors selling items like breads, home-made granola, pastries and more. I encourage all Brooklanders to come out and support our farmers market! The market will set up every Tuesday from 4:00 – 7:00 pm under the Drew Bridge (Michigan St.) next to the Brookland Metro starting Tuesday June 6th.
The team from Licking Creek Bend Farm will be back for this years season of the Farmers Market at the open space under the Drew (Michigan Avenue) Bridge Tuesday June 2nd, and following Tuesdays from 4:00 – 7:00 pm.
This coming week the market will feature strawberries, scallions, herbs, asparagus, red and green buttercrunch lettuce, early peaches
and other produce.
In addition to Licking Creek, the following business will be there:

The Team of the Licking Creek Bend Farm would like all of our readers to know, that they will start this years season of the Farmers Market o the open space under the Michigan Avenue Bridge Tuesday June 3. As a community we can consider ourselves very lucky to be able to take advantage of two farmers markets, this one on Tuesdays and the Monroe Street Market Farmers Market on Saturday. Here is the public announcement that reached us from Esther Siegel:
THE BROOKLAND FARM MARKET SEASON BEGINS TUESDAY, JUNE 3, 3:30-7PM!
And don’t forget the FARM VISIT DAY THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 1, STARTING AT 11:00AM (see directions here). It’s a veggie pot luck, bring yourown reusable plates, cups, utensils. And a bathing suit to swim in the Licking Creek. Come see where your produce is grown and enjoy a relaxing day in the country.
We’re excited to be back!
We’re looking forward to seeing our regular customers, new and continuing CSA members, and welcoming new customers to our market. We have been coming to Brookland for about 12 years (or more!) and appreciate the support we receive from Brookland residents and those who stop on their way home to other neighborhoods.
Our amazing staff, Charmaine at the helm as farm manager, Justin (with us now for 4 years), Kyla (3rd year) and we welcome Emma this year, will be coming each week (some combination as they rotate), and you can ask them about the produce, recipes, and other farming and non-farming questions! Kyla has been studying and experimenting with weeds and is eager to share her raw or cooked, not whacked or composted! We will be adding staff as the season progresses.
While it is early in the season, many of our crops are late in coming due to the extreme weather we’re already experiencing. But, we’ll be featuring our ownspring onions, red leaf and green butter lettuce (see picture below), maybe garlic scapes (we’re waiting for them to pop up!), maybe Swiss Chard (they do a big pop after a big rain), lots of herbs – chives, oregano and cilantro, arrugula and mint. And we’ll see what else “pops up” (Charmaine’s words!). We also may have some lavender plants!
We’re happy that Chris’ Bakery, along with your favorite Upper Crust breads will have some new ones for us,will be back as well as Ester’s Granola with some new flavors she’s developed over the winter.
We’re also pleased to welcome new vendors, Real Sauce Company, Qualia Coffee (beans roasted in Petworth!), nutritional bars and other surprises as the season progresses. We may have some free yoga during the market and one of our customers who is an avid juicer may give instruction and advice on bringing juicing into your lives! See below for descriptions of these new offerings.
Celebrate our more than a decade of delicious and nutritious “farm to you” market starting the 2014 Season this Tuesday, June 3 from 3:30 – 7:00pm
