Art Enables – 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The ninth annual installment of the area’s largest folk and self-taught art exhibition, Outsider Art Inside the Beltway hosts artists from across the country and welcomes visitors to view works selected from over 300 submissions. For more information about the exhibition, click here.

HEMPHILL Fine Art– 6 p.m. to 8 a.m.

HEMPHILL exhibits Thirteen Studies for Painting by Alma Thomas, a member of the Washington Color School. While many art historians have written an almost pejorative narrative of Thomas’ abstraction process, claiming that the artist painted randomly or by intuition, Hemphill Fine Arts’ exhibition attempts to dispel this myth by examining the depth of preparedness required to elaborate Thomas’ aesthetic and the underlying “intellectual power” behind her work.  To read more about Thomas’s studies, click here.

HEMPHILL Fine Art is located at 1515 14th Street NW, second floor.

Sunday, October 12

Joe’s Movement Emporium – 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

James Landry’s show The Word Paintings and Music From The Film Blog Photographs features acrylic paintings, color photographs, and a “photoblog” exploring the ideas of size, space, and perspective. Landry abstracts traditional artistic subjects, such as portraits and still lifes, to make the viewer think twice about the ordinary. For details about the exhibition, click here.

Joe’s Movement Emporium is located at 3309 Bunker Hill Road in Mount Rainier, MD.

ART ENABLES ANNOUNCES ITS 8TH ANNUAL OUTSIDER ART INSIDE THE BELTWAY EXHIBIT

Area’s largest exhibition out Outsider, Folk and Self Taught artists featuring both locally and nationally selected artists

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

 Washington, D.C.

Art Enables hosts the annual exhibit known as Outsider Art Inside the Beltway (OAIB).

Now in its eighth year, OAIB originally started as a way for local groups of self-taught artists to finally exhibit together, the first Outsider Art inside the Beltway show was held at MOCA DC in Georgetown.

Seven years and three locations later, OAIB has grown to take over both floors of the gallery at Art Enables and features artists from across the country for a full two weeks.

Last year was the first OAIB at Art Enables that was opened nationally and over two dozen groups were invited to participate. Many well known organizations from across the US are participating again this year, including The Gallery at HAI (NYC), Creativity Explored (San Francisco), Sophie’s Gallery (California), Spindleworks (Maine) and Pure Vision (NYC) as well as perennial local favorites from groups such as Studio In-Sight (Bethesda), The Studio at Miriam’s Kitchen (DC) and Saint Elizabeths (DC).

Outsider Art Inside the Beltway was juried by local Outsider Art collector Dolly Vehlow from Gallery OonH and Outsider Art gallerists Grey and Linda Carter from Grey Carter Objects of Art. The show continues to be an excellent introduction for people curious about Outsider Art or looking to start their own collection with a selection of very affordable art in a wide array of styles.

Collectors, enthusiasts and aspiring artists are cordially invited to view the exhibit during its opening Saturday, October 12, 2013, from 1-4 pm, at the Art Enables Studio (2204 Rhode Island Ave. NE, Washington, DC  20018). The exhibit is open to the public and free of charge and will continue to be on display until Friday, November 1, 2013. The gallery is open Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm and by appointment.
