Porch Fest is an annual event organized by the good folks at Rhode Island Ave NE Main Street. The event transforms neighborhood porches and stoops into stages for an afternoon of free performances and community based fun. This year’s Porch Fest will be taking place Saturday April 15 from 2-6 pm . If you are, or know of any performers, they are currently lining up participants. From the open call page, where performers can find application details:
We are seeking musicians + singers of all genres, dancers, poets + spoken word artists, etc. to perform at this lively, well-attended annual event.
We thought Brookland music lovers would be interested in this free concert featuring Anthony McGill, principal clarinet New York Philharmonic performing Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. The concert will take place Monday, February 27 from 7:30 to 10:00 PM at
Ward Recital Hall . The event is free but tickets are required, limit 4 per person. Reserve yours here.
It’shard to believe Brookland’s Jazz and Cultural Society (JACS) is turning one year old. Recently they were awarded Best New Jazz Venue from the Washington City Paper and have been getting steady great reviews since they opened. When we first caught up with JACS owner DeAndrey Howard two summers ago, as he was making plans to open JACS, we knew it would evolve into a great neighborhood-focused destination. If you haven’t had the chance to check out this neighborhood venue, their One Year Anniversary Concert would be a great time to do so. From the event page:
The Jazz And Cultural Society is happy to celebrate their ONE YEAR Anniversary THIS Wednesday, May 25th 2016.

Please join TEAM JACS for this special celebration commemorating this important milestone of Jazz and culture in the Brookland/Rhode Island Avenue neighborhood.

Love the sound of the steel pan? Here’s your chance to learn how to play this iconic instrument of Trinidad. The PanTones, an award-winning adult community steel band, is offering this workshop for beginners. We’ll provide the instruments, teach you the technique for playing them, tell you a little bit about the historical and cultural background of the steel drum, and have everyone playing a couple of songs by the end of the afternoon. No prior musical experience required. And, if you’re captivated by playing the pan, we can offer you the opportunity to become part of our ensemble – three members of the group are graduates of the workshop! For more information and to register, contact us as PanTonesBand@gmail.com. You can also reserve your workshop spot directly at this link.
UPDATE – Due to overwhelming response, this workshop on Sat. is currently full, and organizers cannot accept any participants who have not already registered. The Pantones plan to host another workshop soon to meet the added demand. Stay tuned!

Back in March we wrote about Serendipity, a new jazz-focused coffeehouse that opened at the corner of 12th and Kearny Streets, NE. We decided to grab some friends and check it out. The music was really high quality, especially considering there is no cover charge. We enjoyed a number of the specialty cocktails, including one called the Brookland Heartbeet that features an earthy beet-infused vodka. The menu ranges from snacks and appetizers like chicken wings to sandwiches and burgers, as well as entrees like fried catfish. Everyone enjoyed their meal and it was reasonably priced. We will definitely be back. Check out our photos below, and their Facebook page for more info and to learn about upcoming special events. Serendipity is open seven days a week and the live jazz is Wednesday – Sundays from 7:30 – 11:00 pm.
JACS, (Jazz & Cultural Society) is “a community oriented space for musicians and listeners”at 2813 12th Street NE (near the corner of Franklin). We spoke with owner DeAndrey Howard last summer as he was making plans to open JACS. He emphasized that it would be a “family friendly” place that showcases local talent and spoke of discovering jazz in DC’s storied U Street nightclubs as a young man. Now JACS is open and hosts live entertainment every Wednesday and Sunday from 6:00 – 9:00 pm for a $5.00 cover charge. We thought readers would enjoy these photos of their newly painted storefront, pretty cool! Check out JACS Facebook page here.
