A couple of weeks ago we posted about a new development coming to the corner of 12th and Jackson Streets, NE. At the time we didn’t know much about it, but now we know that development plans call for a 34 unit housing development called Jackson Place Flats. Each condo unit will have 2 bedrooms and 2.5 baths and will be two floors each – one floor for living and dining and another for bedrooms and baths. There will also be an option of terrace or penthouse units, with the penthouses coming with a roof deck. You can see the floor plans for these units here. The development is advertising high-end finishes such as granite countertops and will also include gated parking.
The good folks at Elevation DC Media interviewed the developer, Sassan Gharai of Bethesda-based SGA Companies, and it appears that here are still a few bueaucratic hurdles to get over before we can know when they will be completed. Here is part of the interview:
“I’ve lived and worked in D.C. for the last 30 years,” Gharai said, adding that he was a Brookland resident for almost 15. “There’s a major shift underway in the way we live. We’re all moving in from the suburbs and we’re just at the beginning of the process.”
Astrid and I live about 1/2 a block from the development and we are pretty excited about it. First and foremost we are happy that it will be condos, and not apartments. We also feel that this level of density and building height will fit in well with the neighborhood. If we are going to get more restaurants and other retail amenities on 12th Street, then we need more density to support it. Once Jackson Place Flats and Brookland’s Finest are completed, the corner of 12th and Jackson will have turned from a quiet desolate corner with empty buildings and a vacant lot into a vibrant corner in the neighborhood – and we can’t wait!
