Franciscan Monastery Blessing Of The Animals Coming Up This Sunday!

Franciscan Monastery Brookland NE Washington DC
Monastery Blessing Of The Animals 2012

Every fall, the friars at Brookland’s Franciscan Monastery  conduct a Blessing of the Animals event in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals. The free annual event is very popular; last year, we estimated that there were over 60 animals in attendance. The friars give a brief ecumenical service, do a general blessing of all pets in the crowd and then do individual blessings afterward. It is worth checking out, even if your pet isn’t very religious. The Blessing will take place this Sunday, October 6th, from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. For more info, check out the Monastery calendar here. The monastery is located at 1400 Quincy Street, NE.

  1. This is a lovely tradition, and I take my dogs when I can. The blessing does seem to improve doggie behavior, if only for a short while. I’m always impressed that so many animals come together in the Monastery courtyard in a modern day “Peaceable Kingdom.” Last year, when I took the dogs for their annual blessing, I struck up a conversation with someone and turned around to find my huge mastiff mix making friends with a Dachshund. What a blessing!
