There was quite a bit of content here on the Bridge in the spring about the new Brookland Middle School and the Turkey Thicket Playground. The school is slated to open in the fall of 2014, and will be an arts-integrated school that promotes project based learning. The school is now in the design phase and will be built on the site next to Turkey Thicket where the vacant school currently sits now. If you are interested in learning more about the school there is lots of information here, at the DC Public Schools website. There will also be a meeting coming up, we recieved this message from DGS:

“The Department of General Services (DGS) and the DC Public Schools (DCPS) will be hosting a community meeting on Saturday June 22nd at Woodridge Library, 1801 Hamlin Street NE, from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. for the Brookland School project. The purpose of the meeting is to provide an update on the project, introduce the builder, address site logistics and safety (especially as they relate to use of Turkey Thicket Community Center and site) and project next steps.”

Many of our readers signed a petition to ask that the construction of the playground at Turkey Thicket would continue as planned and the recreation center would remain in tact. Recently the Department of General Services provided an update on the playground. The email stated the following:

“would like to move forward with the design and construction of the new playground for Turkey Thicket…The project was temporarily delayed but has not been cancelled. Our goal is to have a community meeting dedicated to the playground in mid-July 2013 to discuss the next steps. Thank you all for your patience as we continue internally to complete the procurement stage of the project.”

Since the design is already complete , hopefully the only thing left to complete is the procurement stage and get construction underway. We will bring you any updates as they become available.

    1. Hi Matt,

Sorry for my delayed reply. I was told by a DGS representative that Brookland Middle School will feed Dunbar, Roosevelt, and Coolidge High Schools.

      Thanks for reading and commenting,
      Shani
