Brookland is really lucking out with new playgrounds this summer! We spoke with Ursula Higgins, ANC 5B-02 Commissioner about the super cool playground that was recently completed at John Burroughs Education Campus, which resides in her Single Member District. Although the playground looks ready for play, she explained that the sod around the play areas needs to grow to a certain level of maturity so that it takes hold, and can withstand the wear and tear expected. The playground will be open to the school kids and the community following a May 30 playground ribbon cutting, at the school’s Family Day event. Commissioner Higgins wanted me to make clear that the whole community is invited to the Family Day festivities, which will take place from 10:00 am – 2:30 pm and will feature recognition of individuals who have been involved in John Burroughs academic life and a balloon release. The only limitations on the playground is that it will be for school use only Monday through Friday until 3:30 pm during the school year and that it is only intended for kids up to 12 years old. That’s too bad for the rest of us – it looks like a super fun playground! I would like to try out that web-rope climbing thing, oh well. John Burroughs Education Campus is located at 1820 Monroe Street NE and is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) school that teaches students from preschool through 8th grade.
