The Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association (BNCA) will be holding its annual election of officers at its upcoming meeting on Tuesday February 19th. If you’re looking for ways to get involved in the Brookland community, this is a great opportunity. Speaking from personal experience, I was the treasurer of the BNCA for about a year and a half and it was a very rewarding experience. The BNCA has four elected offices: President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. Descriptions of the duties of these offices are in the by-laws, which along with the BNCA’s mission, can be found here. From a recent BNCA email:
All BNCA voting members are eligible to run for office:1. You must reside, own property, own a business, or represent a legally registered non-profit within the BNCA boundaries:North: Buchanan Street NE, South Dakota Avenue NE, Michigan Avenue NEEast: 18th Street NESouth: Rhode Island Avenue NEWest: Metro tracks2. You must be at least 16 years of age3. You must have paid your 2013 duesCandidates for office can nominate themselves or be nominated by someone else. All nominees will be given two (2) minutes to describe why they want and are qualified for the office they’re running for. Eligible voters will then vote by secret ballot. Election to office will be by majority vote.
Unfortunately, if you are not a BNCA member yet or your membership has lapsed for more than a year, then you will not be eligible to vote, as voting members need to have their membership current 30 days prior to the election. The election meeting will begin at 7:00 PM at the Howard University School of Divinity, 1400 Shepherd Street, N.E.
