Recently Mayor Muriel Bowser announced plans to replace DC General Family Shelter with homeless shelters in each Ward of DC. In February we wrote about issues a lot of folks had about the shelter location originally proposed for Ward 5 because of its proximity to a trash transfer station, bus lots, a strip club, a night club, and limited access to mass transportation and amenities like a grocery store. Now, two new Ward 5 locations are proposed:
- The former MPD Building at 17th and Rhode Island Avenue, NE
- The Penn Center, located at 326 R Street, NE.

Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie will hold a town hall meeting to discuss these locations on Friday, May 27, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Israel Baptist Church, located at 1251 Saratoga Avenue, NE. Those interested in this issue should be aware that CM McDuffie has stated that he prefers the 17th and RIA location for the shelter. Check out the Mayor’s Ward 5 plan here.
