We thought our beer-loving readers would like to know about the Public Option, a new brewpub that recently opened at 1601 Rhode Island Avenue NE. We chatted with owner Bill Perry, a long time home brewer, and he explained that for now, they are operating in “soft launch” mode, until they work out the kinks and begin to expand offerings and hours of operation. We sampled four of Bill’s brews, a Belgian Ale, a Scottish Ale, and American and English Coffee Porters. All were pretty tasty. My favorite was the American Coffee Porter, while my buddy preferred the British one.
In addition to the house brews, they offer cans and bottles of local breweries and national brands. Wine and a full liquor selection is available, with an emphasis on straight-ahead mixed drinks. All drinks ranged from $6 – $7 – not bad! The Public Option also offers light fare. There were three flatbreads available ($7 each) when we were there, with more options coming soon like bratwurst and other typical pub fair.
For now, their hours of operation are Friday: 3:00 – 7:00 pm, Saturday: noon – 9:00 pm, and Sunday: noon – 7:00 pm. Check out their website here.
